The Tyranny of Desire

Have you ever thought about tyranny and desire together before? I’ll never forget the first time I saw [the concepts] together [in today’s Key Bible Verses]. It was arresting. The sentences said something I knew intuitively was true for me, and in that moment I realized I had seen the same tyrannizing effects on others.

But [in the moment of] temptation, getting my way and obtaining what I want never feel like the doorway to tyranny. Most of the time temptation begins with something good: food, rest, God-approved sex, the need to be loved and accepted, etc. Perhaps this is why the first sensation is always one of anticipation, of potential happiness, and of greater personal fulfillment.

[Our desires] can get so out of control that [they] become our most concrete and real feelings and experiences. In time, with the tyranny unchecked, you [begin to honestly feel] I am my desires. Or I will be the real me when my desires are fulfilled.

But that kind of life is heartbreaking and delusional. Giving into our desires only strengthens them. This is positive news if the desires are good and holy. But if the desires are out of whack, our ungodly desire takes greater and greater control of our lives, and we can fall farther and farther into sin.

Inexplicable Peace

Key Bible Verse: And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7, NKJV)

With all the ups and downs of life, peace can seem hard to come by at times. Yet [today’s Key Bible Verse] tells us there is a peace available to us through Christ that is so strong it “surpasses all understanding”!
Can you imagine a peace so powerful that you experience it even when the circumstances of life are the opposite of peaceful? Even when everything in life is falling apart, God is still able to give you peace. When life seems unbearable, God can provide peace that will guard our hearts and minds from the fear and anxiety that threaten to overwhelm us.

Take a second to evaluate the level of peace in your life. Do you consistently experience a peace that “surpasses all understanding”? Or do you find your peace being swallowed by worry throughout the day?

Perhaps peaceful is the last word you would use to describe your life. If your life is lacking peace, be encouraged: true peace really is available to you! Can you imagine living a life in which God transforms your perspective and provides you with lasting peace?

What must I do to have eternal life?

The greatest problem in the world today is sin. What causes people to hate and lust and have greed? It’s sin. It’s a disease that we all have. The Bible says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” You’ve missed the mark. You’ve broken the law on your way to spiritual death and eternal death and to judgment.

But Jesus said, “I can do something about that. I can change your life. I can make you a new person.”

Jesus demanded that we make a choice.

He says there are two roads of life: the broad road and the narrow road, and you must choose. There are two destinies: heaven and hell. Which road are you on? Which master are you serving?

I don’t have to be judged. I don’t have to go to hell. I don’t have to be lost. My soul has been redeemed. I’m going to heaven, but I’ve got to first repent of my sin and receive Christ as my Lord and my Savior.

You have to repent of your sins. That means to be willing to change your way of living. You may have no power to do it, but if you surrender to Christ, He’ll give you the power.

How many of you here tonight are broken, fed up, but you don’t know what to do? You give your life to Christ tonight and you will have supernatural help in breaking those chains that bind you.

God’s not waiting to judge you. God’s not waiting to condemn you. He’s waiting to receive you with mercy, with love, with open arms, and forgive all your sins. You know, there only comes a few times in our lives when Jesus of Nazareth passes by and we have an opportunity like we have tonight to receive Him. You may never have a tomorrow as far as God is concerned. There are people here tonight that may never be alive tomorrow. You may never hear the Gospel again like this, or your heart may not be this tender toward God. Come while you can and don’t put it off. God is waiting to welcome you with open arms, to receive you as you come to Him in repentance and faith. Simple, and yet could be life changing tonight, and all of heaven will rejoice.

What do I have to do to go to heaven?

God isn’t waiting to judge you. God isn’t waiting to condemn you. He’s waiting to receive you with mercy, with love, with open arms, and forgive all your sins. Will you come to Him? Will you turn from your sin and promise to live for Him?
